OLD NORTH FURNITURE & DESIGNs

Birthed with a simple notion that the story matters.

Telling stories that grip the heart and don't let go.

THE CHALLENGE

Spencer Ratliff is a furniture designer based in Knoxville, Tennessee. He got his start with one off custom pieces, and he has works on larger commercial projects throughout Eastern Tennessee. His pursuit of this business with birthed with teh simple notion that story matters, and that products are not just mean tot be consumed. He seeks to create products an goods that establish connections and help build legacy.

When the commercial side of his business began to eclipse custom pieces, Spencer saw a need for a identity rehaul. He reached out to Balernum with the hopes of repositioning himself towards a more affluuent audience and wanted to look and feel the part.

After doing some digging, his business goals had changed, and his branding and messaging were no longer relevant or attractive to the commercial clients he really wanted.

THE CHALLENGE

Kent Mast is a filmmaker based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He got his start with wedding films, and he has worked as a visual storyteller for eight years.

When the commercial side of his business began to eclipse weddings, Kent saw a need for a new website. He reached out to Balernum. We asked questions, looked under rocks, and realized that Kent’s needs went deeper than a new portfolio site.

His business goals had changed, and his branding and messaging were no longer relevant or attractive to the commercial clients he really wanted. At the same time, other media companies in Lancaster were putting out impressive work. Their brands had the sophistication and polish that Kent’s lacked.

Kent was good at telling other people’s stories but what about his own? He needed a strong brand and website to communicate the quality and artistry of his work.

Asset 6

When developing the symbol, we wanted to portray the essence of the brand in a visual manner by showcasing the journey of Spencer's jump into entrepeneurship and his love for the outdoors. We also wanted the symbol to be as ownable when detached from the wordmark, something that was modern and distinct.

We knew the symbol had to be architecturally sound. To match the quality,  and nuance of his pieces themselves. The result of that thinking was a strong symbol with a circular structure, abstracting the idea of a compass and a north star. Alhrough abstracted from the real form of a compass, the imagery is clear.

The compass embodies the idea of searching, discipline, patience, perserverance, etc.

"Everything changed after working with the guys at Balernum. Anytime I am asked big vision questions, I get nervous and shut down. I feel like I'm missing something, or I may say the wrong thing. Chris walked me through every stage of the process, and actually identified pivotal things that he saw, which tremendously helped me step into a full expression of our brand identity."
